Picture

Key Idea

An introduction to a series of lessons, explicitly looking at dangers and limits of internet usage.
It serves to raise awareness of personal choices and media use, individually and as a peer group.

Who is it for?

This activity is suitable for a class activity, 24 students approx.
Age range: 14-16 years

Key Learning

I wanted my students to be able to reflect on their internet use and the impact this has on lifestyle and mental health, for themselves and their peers.

What do I need?

A questionnaire/survey on internet usage. Example provided.

File Size: 18 kb
File Type: docx

How long does it take?

1 x 60 minutes

Step 1 - Introduction

QUESTIONNAIRE - Online Communication - What do you use?
Students fill out the questionnaire privately and anonymously - on paper or online - and submit.

Step 2 - What Next?

Discussion of the results in class:
  • Pupils predict usage results for each app or service detailed on the survey- the teacher fills out an “assumption questionnaire” to keep a record of the general consensus of opinion for the class as a whole
  • Actual results are shown
  • Students express themselves and evaluate the results
  • Assumptions and real numbers are compared and discussed

Step 3 - Reflect and Evaluate

Reflection: conclusions from class discussion.
  • Did any results surprise you?
  • Were you aware of how much time you spend online?
  • Would the results be similar for other age groups or generations?
  • Why do we find internet use so engaging?
  • Is the situation likely to alter in the future?
  • Rating of media consumption in class: healthy or unhealthy?

Step 4 - Let's Share

Questionnaire can be shared with wider audiences, for example parents or other students, to increase the sample size and raise awareness across school community.
