Picture

Key Idea

I wanted my students to be able to reflect on how media consumption shapes attitudes, values and behaviour for us as individuals and through society, through subliminal messaging. This happens in a multitude of ways and we need to use critical thinking to become more aware of this process and the influences and pressures we are exposed to in life.

Who is it for?

This activity is suitable for a class activity 24 students approx.
Age range: 14-16 years

Key Learning

To question the unconscious influence of the media on our thinking and behaviour - personally and in society.

What do I need?

A selection of thought-provoking images on a technology/ social media theme.
Examples provided (Word document).

How long does it take?

1 X 60 minutes

Step 1 - Introduction

Think - Pair - Share
  • Students are presented with a selection of images and chose one to think about, silently.
  • Students reveal the image they chose to a partner. Pairs discuss initial thoughts and ideas about the message of the image/their personal reaction.
  • Pairs share their responses with the class.

Step 2 - What Next?

Creating mind maps -
  • Pairs link up to create groups of four. Each group to select one image and write comments, questions and ideas around their chosen image, to create a mind map.
  • What is the message behind the image? How does it make you think or feel?
  • Students rotate around the images/mind maps, reading the comments and adding further responses.

Step 3 - Reflect and Evaluate

Each group returns to their own mind map and feedback to the class on why they chose their image. Encourage students to make connections with other images/mind maps they saw and the comments they read through class discussion.
How is technology changing our lives? Does social media make us feel differently about ourselves? ... about other people?

Step 4 - Let's Share

Present outcomes to the school - should the occasion arise - exhibition in the foyer, etc.
