Key Idea

This lesson was part of the topic of stereotypes. The aim is to help students create and recognise stereotypes and to develop critical thinking skills in the most possible life-like situation. This lesson is designed for online delivery.

Who is it for?

Students aged 16-17 years

Key Learning

  • To promote critical thinking and open-mindedness
  • To consider how assumptions and stereotyping can influence decision making

What do I need?

Paper, pen/laptop or tablet and virtual meeting place with possibility to create breakout rooms, if remote learning

How long does it take?

1 x 70 minutes

Step 1 - Introduction

Divide students into two groups and allocate tasks:
Group A: Create an advert for a real estate lease, describing the facilities of the property and a short profile of the landlord.
Group B : Create a thorough profile of a prospective tenant, describing their nationality, skin colour, education, family, religion, job, reason for looking for a new lease, etc.
Neither group is told what the other group was doing nor what they had this task for.

Once the initial tasks are completed, introduce next phase.
For Group A: To carry out interviews with prospective tenants and decide who would get the contract and why.
For Group B: The task is to meet three property owners and go through the interview process, sticking to the profile they had created for themselves.

Step 2 - What Next?

Group A present their property adverts to the whole class, so that Group B can decide which properties they liked most before the interviews begin.
The activity can be carried out on Zoom platform. The interviews take place in separate breakout rooms - each property owner has a designated breakout room. A time limit is set for each round of interviews. After every interview, the prospective tenants return to the main room, while property owners remained in their breakout room.
When all three rounds of interviews are complete,  all the participants return to the main room for the final discussion.

Step 3 - Reflection and Evaluation

Group A announce the successful tenants and give reasons for their decision.
Group B reveal their tenant profiles and open the floor up for discussion and enquiry.

Possible questions for evaluation:
  1. Did the nationality/skin colour/religion/etc. influence your decision when choosing the tenant or the property?
  2. What did it feel like to be someone else? Expand.
  3. How difficult was it to stay in the character you invented?
  4. What kind of stereotypes have you had contact with?
  5. How important are stereotypes in our community? Everyday life?
  6. If you were to lease your property, what would be the main factors that you would consider?
  7. After the profiles were revealed, did you want to reconsider your decision as a landlord? Why? Why not?
